Annual Funding for the 'My Safe Florida Home' Program is Essential for Property Insurance Relief
What is it?
The My Safe Florida Home program was enacted by the Florida Legislature to help Florida homeowners protect their homes against hurricanes and save money. Here's how it works: Florida homeowners apply for a free home hurricane inspection and receive a report detailing the strength of their home against hurricanes and recommended improvements to increase that strength. They can also qualify for up to $10,000 in state grant money and receive up to $2 for every dollar spent on eligible home strength improvements. Homeowners can potentially lower their home insurance premiums by reporting their home strength improvements to their insurance providers.
Huge success:
The 'My Safe Florida Home' (MSFH) program has seen huge demand. As of October 25, about $25.7 million in reimbursements have been sent to 2,881 homeowners, an average of $9,137. Of those homeowners, 1,468 have disclosed insurance premium discounts, which the department puts at $1,014 annually.
The Problem: 800 applications a day, and a backlog of unfulfilled applications
Despite its clear success and vital importance, the program lacks permanent funding and has a backlog of more than 17,000 applications waiting for funding. Originally established in 2006 for just one year, it remained defunded until its revival in 2022. And the program has already run through its funding for this year. To truly prioritize the well-being of Floridians, it is crucial that lawmakers commit to annually funding the MSFH program.
